Custom Machining

Custom Machining is a collection of material-working processes in which power-driven machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines and drill presses, are used with cutting tools to mechanically cut material to achieve the desired geometry and surface texture.

Machining is not just one process - it is a group of processes. The common feature is the use of a cutting tool to produce a chip, called swarf, which is removed from the work piece. Typically, powered machines are required to operate the cutting tools. With the exception of some soft metals, experience has shown that harder metals are more difficult to cut than softer metals. The harder it is to penetrate the metal, the more power is required to cut it. The cutting speed must always be kept within the limits of the cutting tool and material to be cut, thereby making it necessary to use a different cutting speeds.

There are four “traditional" machining processes turning, drilling, boring and milling. Other miscellaneous processes would be tapping, reaming, broaching and sawing. Much of modern day machining is controlled by computers using computer numerical control (CNC). While the various machining processes may appear to be very different, they all make chips.
